I’m a little late on bringing some heart health awareness during Heart Health Awareness month, but it’s never too late to give your heart some love!
February is (was) a month dedicated to heart health awareness. Maintaining good heart health is important when it comes to preventing chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Millions of Americans are suffering from high blood pressure which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and/or heart disease so keeping blood pressure under control is a great start to preventing health problems down the road.
One easy way to start taking control of your blood pressure is through the foods that you eat. Every day, at every meal YOU have the chance to take control of your heart health.
Here are some easy, and helpful tips to keeping blood pressure low and preventing heart disease:
- Eat less meat: Reducing your intake of meat helps to lower overall saturated fat intake. Saturated fat can lead to high cholesterol levels, as well as raise blood pressure. Take one or two days out of the week to go meatless, replacing it with other protein sources such as beans, tofu, tempeh, or meat-free alternatives (veggie burgers, plant-based meats, etc.)

I was back at home, and out of my apartment for the week so today’s food was a little different than it typically is. For breakfast, I didn’t have my “usual,” but instead had two slices of (slightly burnt..oops!) Ezekiel cinnamon raisin bread drizzled with maple syrup and two bananas. I also had a cup of coffee, with some almond milk added to it.
My mom has a huge container of herbs, and the basil was growing super tall. I picked off several stems and started to dry them to make some dried basil. It’s really easy to do! All you have to do is pick some stems of an herb, then tie a string (yarn or twine works well) to the end of the stem, and then tie each stem to a coat hanger. Hang the hangers in a dark, dry closet for a few weeks and you’ll have some awesome/flavorful dried herbs! Super simple and inexpensive!

With the new year finally here, lots of people are beginning diets and making decisions to remove things from their diets. Taking foods away can be beneficial to your health, but it can also be disappointing and feel a lot more like a loss/failure if those foods make it back onto your plate. Removing things can feel negative and overwhelming. So instead, try adding things to your diet/life and slowly you will find that you don’t crave the “bad” foods as much! I love the concept of adding foods, rather than removing because adding is much more positive and you’ll be getting those nutrients from the good foods you add regardless of the other foods you’re eating. So here are 10 foods I think you should add to your grocery list and incorporate into your menus in the new year.

Salads can be one of the most nutritious meals you can eat, but they can also be a dangerous trap you can get caught in. All parts of a salad can be either beneficial or not depending on the base, toppings, add-ins, and dressing you choose to use to build your salad.
To me, it’s important to always be eating with a purpose by packing as many nutrients in a meal that I possibly can. Salads are an excellent way to “eat with a purpose” and I’m going to show you how you can do that!
